Ah... Karateka, that's something I haven't heard in a long time :)
They really should do a sequal (yes, I know about the Take-1 movie thingie)

Ahm. To get pass the gate, get as close as you can to the gate without 
having it come down on you. Kick, punch whatever into air will trigger 
the gate to come down. After a second or two the gate will rise. Go 
through it while it is rising. (NOT AFTER IT HAS RISEN)
