The software will not work on a IIgs. The two salesdroids who said
the software would work probably think the IIgs is a MAC.

An external modem will work. The only question is whether the cable
will work. External modems are external modems. The makers usually
sell them in PC or MAC varieties - same modem but packaged with the
necessary cables and software to work on the respective platforms.
The cable with the PC version will not work on a IIgs. The cable on
the MAC versions might work. For 9600+ speed modems, the Apple IIgs
needs a hi-speed hardware-handshaking modem cable. Some of the
cables that come with MAC packed modems are correctly wired for the
IIgs; some are not. Buy it and try it. If it does not work, order a
correctly wired cable from InTrec or Alltech.

Well, I do not believe that Prodigy has IIgs software and neither
does AOL, so those two services are out. CS, GEnie, and Delphi all
are accessible by a IIgs. As are any Internet Service Providers that
provide dial-up shell accounts (no SLIP/PPP yet for the IIgs).

All that is needed is the modem and a telecommunications program.
The three main commercial programs are Proterm 3.1, Spectrum 2.0 and
Ansiterm.
