I've heard this claim several times, but I downloaded the file myself
a while ago, and it seemed to be fine.

The only possible problem I could see is that the file is larger than
800k, so you would need a large RAM disk or hard drive to download it.

HQX is a Macinotsh format - it is a BinHex encoded file containing a
compressed disk image.

The so-called BXY files on ftp.support.apple.com have some garbage at
the start of the file (a MacBinary header, possibly?).  If you can
strip that off, the rest of it is a valid BXY file.

Yes.  HyperCard IIgs requires a hard drive and at least 1.5MB of RAM
(I'd recommend 2MB as a reasonable minimum).
