With regard to storing computers in the attic, there is indeed
a downside to all that temperature (and humidity?) cycling.

Just swinging the temp around stresses both micro- and 
macro-structures, so you'll at least have to re-seat all the
socketed parts before re-use.  And if relative humidity gets
high, as the temperature swings, water can condense on
everything, inviting corrosion and other infections!

If you have to do it, try to seal them in plastic and include
a dessicant, like those little bags of silica gel that keep
dropping out of electronic equipment packages.  ;->
