Nice idea. But every color monitor I've seen up to now (quite a lot)
is degaussed automatically when turned on, even if they don't
have a degauss button. So I strongly suspect the monitor to be
defective. I'd check this first, especially since a defect in the
demagnetization circuit can be dangerous (high currents, a defect may
cause fire sooner or later).
