I know--I have a Powerbook 100, and use LocalTalk when I need to
transfer big files from the net (I have a PPP connection) to my GS.
It's pretty terrrible, I agree.

How about something exotic like a Corvus Omninet (do I remember this
correctly?) system between the GSes. Provided I can find one, will it
work with the GSes? And are the Corvus drives themselves something that
I can upgrade--SCSI or IDE--or will I have to live with the shared 20-
or 40-meg partition that was the norm when the things were made?
