This is personal preference and/or ability. I know of one fellow that 
made short (two inch) jumpers from all of the ports to connectors on the 
back of the tower. I chose to mount the motherboard right up to the back 
of the tower and cut holes (lots of work) to have access to the 
motherboard ports from the back. The only minus was the disk drive port 
was now out the back of the tower and the drives were inside, so my drive 
cable comes out of the back and connects back the port through the access 
hole. This later turned out to be a plus as it allowed me to hook up a 
second external 3.5 drive for mass copying purposes.

This setup left access to the printer, keyboard and monitor ports which 
are the only external components.
