Not true at all! Shaston is proportional. Compare an l and an M.

You could use Courier. I made a font for a program I am writing, which
is based on Shaston, but is monospaced, and comes in 7x8 and 7x7 sizes,
to fit as many (readable) characters on the display as possible. I
suppose I could stick it on cco and grind if you're interested. All
printable characters are defined (unlike Shaston...)
