   No conversion is required? Not really. GIFs are compressed
internally with LZW compression, much like .SHK files. Fast PCs with
optimized code can unpack small GIFs almost instantly, but they still
have do a good chunk of work. Compare how fast a PC can unpack a large
file to a GD, and you'll see why a GS accelerator and a SS will be a
nice thing.
