if you don't want to get connected to the internet or a some unix-site with
your gs, don't bother to get into it.
if you've never heard of tcp/ip before, you probably can live on without it.
if you do want to know more about it however, you'd be surprised what an
uncountable amount of documentation there is available...
basically tcp/ip (transmission control protocol/internet protocol) is one
type of "network protocol" which was lucky to become a de-facto standard in
unix systems and in the internet. it provides all essential services for
interconnecting, resource-sharing, etc. - generally a distributed environment.
