Using Apple's LocalTalk connectors the max length per network is 1000ft. 
Of course this is the theoretical max.  It may be longer, but you'd be
pushing it.

Using phonenet type connectors the distance should be the same, but the
better quality phone line the better chance of no errors.

Not true, a Appleshare server can access and share printers that are
connected to it via the serial port.  In particular, the Imagewriter and
Laserwriter 3xx printers that are direct connect serial line. (AppleShare
version 3.0 or later)

The DJ 500 cannot be shared without a program called "Printer Share" from
(I think) Orange Micro.  It operates much like the AppleShare file server,
but will allow you to share any printer you have a serial driver for.  If
that is not who makes it, I'll look around and see if I can find the info.
