The only way to boot over a network is to get AppleShare 3.0 running on
the Mac. This is a rather expensive program ($900 or so) but can be found
cheaply if you look. If you are interested, I may have a lead on one for
about $250. There is another option, though. Before I got the
AppleShare, I figured out how to do a local boot with a network and still
have a usable system. The only thing needed in addition to the system
software is Pointless (commercial) and IR (free for the downloading). Set
up a local boot disk with all the network inits installed. Exit the
installer and delete the finder, TS3 (or TS2 if you have a ROM 3), all
fonts, and all desk accessories except Control Panel. Install PointLess
onto this disk and also put IR in the System.Setup folder. The only other
CDEV's you need besides PointLess are AppleShare, NetPrinter, and
SetStart. Now get back into the installer and put on the printer drivers
you need (I had LaserWriter and AT ImageWriter). Put the finder and any
inits, NDA's, CDA's, Finder Extras, etc. that you plan to use onto your
Mac HD. Now, when you boot you will need to get into the SetStart CDEV
and tell it to run the finder on the Mac HD every time it boots. One you
are in the finder, get into the Pointless CDEV and direct it to all the
TrueType fonts on your Mac HD. If you want to use any of your system
extensions after booting, just find them on the Mac HD and double-click on
them to make them active by the magic of IR. Works great (although slowly
compared to a local HD). If you need more explicit directions, don't
hesitate to ask.
