Under what circumstances?

Most ProDOS applications (SYS files) that support 80-column mode will
automatically enable it if the 80-column card is detected.  The same
goes for some BASIC programs.

If you want to select 80-column mode while in BASIC, use the PR#3
command.  The computer will then remain in 80-column mode until you
press Control-Reset, or you run a program which switches back to
40-column mode again.
