Take a look at your Hardware Handshaking Check box under the Settings menu-
Port.  If it is not checked then do so. I think this will solve your problem.
Of course, you'll need a properly wired hardware handshaking cable for
everything to function properly after doing this!

If this checkbox is left unchecked then Spectrum uses its own beep routine
in order to avoid losing characters during a beep. The hardware handshaking
cable alleviates this problem.

This is all from memory but I'm pretty sure I have the general details
down.
