Sounds like a problem I had some time ago.  It turned out to be a bad
RAM chip.  One of the RAM chips on my 1Mb Apple Memory Expansion card
had gone bad.  It was piggy-backed on a 4Mb C. V. Technologies GS
Memory Expansion card.
 
You're going to need some other software to check all of your RAM
because the internal System Check doesn't.  You should use a program
that does a continuous, repetitive check.  You should let it run for
several hours or until it reports a problem.  If you have AppleWorks
GS, it comes with a program called MEMORYTEST.CL, which will check all
available RAM and will do a continuous, repetitive check.  Keep in
mind, one pass through RAM with no errors doesn't prove a problem
doesn't exist!
