The only comment I have to add to this:

Don't blame ProDOS for BASIC.SYSTEM's shortcomings.  The ProDOS MLI is
a vast improvement over anything DOS 3.3 provides for machine language
programs.  BASIC.SYSTEM is a major disappointment.
