Some Mac models, namely the Plus, Classic, and LC, have no connection on pin
7, the general purpose input. I have a 14400 modem on my Plus which handles
57600 bps without it. So I guess it's not strictly required, although since
IIgses have it, Spectrum relies on it. Pin 8 is indeed the DCD signal from the
modem. I use Apple Remote Access on the Plus and it answers calls so guess it's
not needed for a host either.
