If AppleWorks says the file is damaged, it is likely that any other
program that tries to follow the file structure will also fail.

One option that may be useful as a last resort:

Use the Word Processor to add the database to the desktop as a text
file.  You will at least have access to the text of the fields, but
the record and category formatting will be compeltely lost.

There is a technical note on the file format (which covers AppleWorks
3.0 and earlier).  See FTN.19.XXXX.  It is available from
ftp.apple.com, in one of the subdirectories off /dts/aii.
