Wrong. The original IIc ROM doesn't support SmartPort - you need a
ROM upgrade (to version 0 or higher) to be able to use any SmartPort
devices.
You can then use the UniDisk 3.5, or SmartPort hard drives. You
cannot use the more common Apple 3.5 Drive, SuperDrive or third-party
3.5" drives, all of which require a IIgs, IIc+, Macintosh, or special
controller card in a IIe.

I seem to recall at least one of their Z-RAM cards having a Z80 on it
and supporting CP/AM.

I don't think you can install a ZIP CHIP and Z-RAM at the same time -
they get in the way of each other.
