| I do it all the time. Set ProComm to auto answer (ATA). Have both machines
| hooked to the same phone line. Set the GS term program to dial out the
| number 1. This gets you a dial tone as needed for the modems to continue.

actually....
i've managed to get two computers hooked up without any need for the
dial tone from the phone. just plug the two modems together, ATA on
one, and ATD on the other.
the TRICK is that you have to turn off any "smart" features that look
for a dial tone, or do the ATD from a modem that doesn't check very
hard for a dial tone.
you'd be surprised... my apple's modem (intel 14.4/14.4e) is a lot more
picky than my notebook's modem (AST something or other internal, 24/96
with MNP5).
