Okay, I now have (wide) sockets to cut in half and the appropriate
SRAMs (4 32kx8 15ns .3 mil)... my question is, what is the best way
to solder in the sockets? I have some electronics experience, but not
with soldering stuff onto a pcb board that cost me over $200. :)

In the April issue of GS+, the zip is sold for $189 in the 8/16 config.
Some years ago I paid something like $225 for it. Recently I bought
the 14 Mhz cpu, sockets, and SRAMs for about $60. Still need a crystal
and the two replacement chips.
