need help down loading

I need some help on getting a downloading problem fixed. I'm trying to
download some software from FTP.CCO.CALTECH.EDU/PUB/APPLE2. I'm going for
the SHK types. Earlier this week I downloaded something, logged off, ran
it through shrinkit (both 8 bit and GS versions). The 8bit Shrinkit said
that "WARNING MASTER HEADER DAMAGED", while GS shrinkit just displayed a
header line saying "DAMAGED" and in the right hand side "700 items".
I thought perhaps I needed to BINSCII or GSCII+ first. Same results.
I then tried to download some different software. The result was identical.

I'm using PROTERM (2.1). The freenet lets us use Kermit or Zmodem to
download. I'm downloading as binary and the file comes across as Binary.
I've downloaded SHK files from one of the local BBS with no trouble
unpacking and using.

Am I doing something wrong or is this quirk with Proterm or the local
Freenet? Incidentally, Binscii and GSCII+ download fine.
