I need a reliable used machine that can help me read and port these 650 sides over to the PC world. What should I look for? Should I stick with a ][+ or is there a better, more useful later version that would work?

Since you have a working serial card, disk interface card and disk drive, you only need the computer itself. A II+ is fine if you want to ensure better compatibility with your current system but a IIe would be fine as well but if you do go with a IIe, you will probably need to put the serial card in slot 1 or 2 as slot three is pretty much reserved for 80 column capabilities.

If you get a IIc as others have suggested, you will not be reusing any of your old hardware and you will need a new serial cable as the IIc serial ports use 5 pin DIN connectors. If you get a IIgs, you can reuse your serial card and drives but if you want to use the IIgs' serial ports then you will also need a different serial cable as its ports use 8 pin mini-DIN connectors.

Getting a newer machine such as the IIe, IIc or IIgs is only really needed if you plan on continuing to use the Apple hardware and want more functionality and access to programs that won't run on a II+.
