I believe (if I remember correctly from the _Softalk_ article; it's been a
few years :) that they trapped _unimplemented_ instructions from the 6502
instruction set. (That is, not all 256 possible opcodes actually were
implemented [successfully?] for the 6502, so they could use an
"unimplemented" opcode and external logic to trap and execute an "extended
address" operation.)
