Kensington Turbo Mouse Question

I just hooked up a Kensington Turbo Mouse trackball and I have a
question about its scrolling.  When I spin the ball clockwise to move
the cursor to the right, all is well.  But, when I spin the ball
counter-clockwise to move the cursor to the left, unless I am careful
to spin the ball only from the 12 o'clock position with a downward
force, the ball lifts slightly and the cursor of course does not move
very far.  Is this how trackballs work?
