I think that at least one version of ProDOS that was intended to
be ][ compatible picked up some 65c02 ops and was rendered a //e+
version, though it didn't depend on the //e other than for the new ops.
It might be that you can run just about any ProDOS on a ][ by adding the
65c02 (which must go for around $5), though you'd certainly have to patch
out whatever part of ProDOS went looking for the //e signature bytes.
This is pretty speculative on my part, though.
