In search of useful movement of AWGS files to Mac

My father-in-law is moving from a Apple IIgs to a newly purchased Mac.
He needs to get some AppleWorks GS databases (and perhaps some spreadsheets)
into the Mac package he is using (ClarisWorks, which came with his Performa).

Is there any software out there that would be helpful for him?  He
says that word processing files work okay, but the database files fail
with an 'unable to identify creator resource' error msg.
