Just for what it's worth I have a MAC Classic and I took my external 800K 
drive off of it (Just now !) and plugged into my GS.

It works fine!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  I booted from it and read several disks 
from Prosel and the finder with no hiccups. When it doubt try it.
