There is a system extension called "ProDOS File System" that came with
the Apple //e card Apple released for the LC series, which enables a
Mac to read and write to ProDOS discs directly, without using Apple
File Exchange. It is available on ftp.apple.com, but you'll have to
download both disc images for the //e card software - it's on one of
them.

You don't need the //e card to use it, and I haven't found a reasonably
modern Mac that it won't run on. However, if you have an LC575 with
an ethernet card in the PD-slot, the extension will cause some system
conflicts with the ethernet drivers and hang the machine. This could
also be the case with other LCs. It behaves this way because it
assumes that anything you plug into the PD-slot is a //e card, even
if it isn't.
