Actually, Applied Engineering had a card for the II series which added
an 80x86 processor and a hunk of RAM and let you run MS-DOS if you really
wanted to. Spiffiest features were that you could use the memory on the
card in Apple II programs and that the card could do some funky manipulations
of the Unidisk 3.5" disk drives to let them read MS-DOS formatted disks
even though they were supposed to only be able to read Apple 800k format.
There was also an earlier 8088 coprocessor for the IIe, not for the sake
of MS-DOS but for use as an actual coprocessor to speed up math and such.
I forget the manufacturer's name for that one, but their ads were headlined,
"Two chips are better than one."
