Thanks for making me want to try even harder to get it done. ;-)
The problems I see in the Apple II community come from two factors:
1.) Not enough new people
2.) Existing people not actually doing stuff with their Apple
The first problem has to do with how Apple computer equipment gets
traded/sold around. I have a feeling that the vast majority of people
receiving Apple equipment from friends/family and those buying it online,
already own an Apple. That is, they're just increasing their already (likely
sizable) collection. So there aren't any completely new people getting into
the scene with real Apple hardware. Of course, there are emulators to help.
But they aren't the end-all solution.
The second problem is probably just as grave as the first, and it has even
more implications. I got a blast of reality from this thread. I don't
actually know what I expected the responses to be like, but this isn't what
I was expecting. Anyone remember MountIt for the IIgs? What about iDisk?
Anyone talking about the Carte Blanche? It seems like these new developments
get their 15 minutes (typically a week, a month if you're lucky) of fame,
and then are promptly forgotten. Maybe people are talking about it on some
other site. I'm not any better. Sure, I've downloaded the latest 1.3 version
of MountIt, but have I used it? Nope. (Of course, I don't have a hard disk
for my IIgs so it's impractical). Basically the only things that sees
interest and a fair amount of updates is ADT and the emulators. I used both
ADTPro and Virtual ][ last night.
So it seems like the Apple II community is just a bunch of old fogies (maybe
not literally) sitting around, just waiting for someone else to release a
new project that they can talk about for a week before waiting around the
next thing. Maybe I'm one of them.
