Hey Thye Chean,
I don't think your process is at fault. I've ftp'd them to my unix
account and downloaded them directly onto my GS, and I get the same
end result that you do. I think that the files are still messed up
on the ftp site.
But, one of your steps involve a Mac. So, why don't you just download
the Mac archived format and decode to 800k disks on the mac?
