Sounds like you forgot to turn on 'binary' mode (type 'binary,'
surprise, surprise) within the ftp program. If you do a straight ascii
download, the file can be subtly mucked up enough to make them
unpackable.

Very definitely sounds like binary mode's off. The ascii munging of
files doesn't affect the binscii info, but .shk files can not stand
being corrupted.
Note: this post would have been better sent to comp.sys.apple2,
not the programmer group. I've crossposted this to both so that others
can see the answer, then followups will be sent to c.s.a2.
