While the Apple II certainly did carry the Mac for quite a while,
it's somewhat misleading to state that Macintosh's poor sales were
the reason the GS was produced. In fact, the Mac Plus, which was
a best-selling model in its day, was released many (eight, I think)
months before the GS. The //c and //e were the machines primarily
responsible for keeping Apple afloat while the Macintosh platform
matured.
