Corrupted Finder by Archiver???

Hello All,

This post has two parts and could get pretty long with details, so I'll post
a summary of the two parts, and then the details.

Part 1 of Post Summary:
1) I got a new 270MB HD to replace a 60MB for my GS.
2) I backed up both of the 32 MB partitions of the 60MB HD using Archiver
   file backup.
3) I hooked up the 270 (to the RAMFast) and set up 3-32MB partition and the
   rest an HFS partition.
4) I restored the file backups to the first two 32 MB partitions.
5) I started having problems when displaying windows in the finder and viewing
by anything but large or small icons.
6) Narrowed problem down to the finder applications itself.
7) Concluded that Archiver must have corrupted the Finder.

Part 2 of Post Summary:
1) Need a reliable GS backup program that meets my needs.

Now the Details:

Part 1:

Well you know the scenario from the summary above, so I'll fill in the details.
I first found problems with the new HD installation when in the finder and
opened a directory which had a finder.data set to show files by kind.
I got a message that said could not find file type descriptors and that I
must have at least one file called Ftpye installed etc. etc. THen I hit
return and the system froze. I shift booted and tried opening the window
again, and this time I got no error message, but only the icons and the
names showed up. there was no size, kind or date info. I selected an
icon and did info, and that information was available, so I knew that
not all my files were corrupted. I rebooted and only disabled Hard Pressed,
and this time opening the directory, I got the familiar finder needs 300K
message, and the system froze. I then disabled a few DAs, and then the system
would crash into the monitor when I opened the offending window.

At this point I wanted to make sure that I was not having SCSI terminator
problems, so I copied the directory that was causing the problem to the
RAM drive, and it did the same thing when it was opened. I then formatted
the RAM drive and installed a basic System 6.0.1 on it (no finder), and
then booted it. I then launched the finder off of my HD and got the same
results. During this process I found that it wasn't just with that one
window, but it happened any time I opened a folder that wasn't a root dir.
and then displayed by name, kind, date. or size. At this point I figured
it had to be with the finder itself. So, I increased the RAMDrive and
installed a complete system. I then booted from the RAMDrive, and everything
worked fine. I then concluded that the problem was with the finder application,
so to confirm this I did a file compare of the finder on my RAMDrive to the
finder on my HD. I found many differences throughout the Data fork of
the two finders! I replaces the finder on my HD, and it worked fine.
I figure that Archiver must have corrupted the file since I've no such
problems ever before. Any other ideas would be appreciated. I'm going
to go through randomly some files on the HD and compare them to versions
I have backed up.
Oh, one more thing to add. When I did the file restore with Archiver, it
forced me to restore to a folder. I couldn't restore to the root dir.
on the volume. So, I created a Temp folder, and restored to that and then
in the finder, dragged everything out of temp to the root, and deleted
temp. This shouldn't cause any problems, but it might be related somehow...

Part 2:

I'm looking for a backup program for the GS that is reliable. I'd use
Prosel, but the last version of it that I saw could only backup to
Apple 3.5" 800k disks. I need something that can backup to a file on
a large HD. I'd also like it to do Volume and File backups. Compression
Would be nice too! Right now I'm thinking of just doing file Archives
with GS Shrinkit until I find something better.

Thanks,

-Shawn
