more on the shot hard disk
I got out the hard disk and gave it another go. It was impossible to reassign
any more bad blocks so I moved on to formatting and partitioning with a 10 mb
volume and the rest as apple_free. Unfortunately CSU doesn't create
apple_driver partitions so the first try was for naught. So I put it on the
Mac and used SCSI Director. I selected 10 mb for the first volume then let it
use the rest for a second. I deleted the second volume causing the space to
become apple_free. Then I inited the volume. It still had a coupla bad blocks
though. I copied my Mac Plus system 7.5 install system folder from one disk
to the bad one. Then I tried to copy the files back off. I replaced the files
which couldn't be read and left the shot copies in place so that the bad blocks
would not be reallocated. This drive is just intended for booting the Plus so
it can be small and since I won't be copying files to it, it shouldn't cause
problems.
Why am I trying so hard to get this drive to work you ask? Well I bought it
over the net and it turns out I was taken by a scam artist. The drive is noisy
and has a hunk broken out of the pot metal case, making it obvious that the
reason it has bad blocks is because it has smacked the floor pretty hard. So
by getting it to work I'm not ripped off as much.
