Did you have the IIgs set to "Slow" speed? I don't know if that would
be a factor, but it would be worth trying.

Might you have shorted out the battery, e.g. by touching the underside
of the motherboard to a large metal object? Shorting out at least one
of the pins on the clock/battery RAM chip would have the same effect.
