It depends which 3.5" drive this is. If it is an Apple 3.5 Drive
("platinum" colour), it will not work on a IIc. If it is a UniDisk
3.5 ("white" colour), it will work on a IIc, provided you have an
appropriate ROM version.
The drive model should be printed on a label on the underside of the
drive.
To check if you have the right ROM version in the IIc, get into BASIC
and type:
PRINT PEEK(64447)
If it says 255, then you need a ROM upgrade before you can use the
UniDisk 3.5. If it says 0, 3 or 4, then you are OK.

The SmartPort firmware lives in slot 5 on a IIc, so the first two 3.5"
drives would be S5,D1 and S5,D2.
