There is actually, it's a small Applesoft BASIC patch included on
Sequential Systems' RAM-GS Diagnostic diskette (packaged with the RAM-GS
4mb card). The patch is 2.5k in size and tricks AppleWorks 2.0 into seeing
only 2megs of available RAM when there are in fact 4megs or more. It's
included on my rev 1.8 disk.
It's not freeware however, you must either buy a RAM-GS card or
order the patch from Sequential Systems (don't remember the exact cost,
but it is only a couple of dollars). Of course there's also the two
solutions you've listed -- upgrade to a newer version of AW or create
a RAM disk 2 or more megabytes in size.
