   There are pretty much 2 main ones: cco.caltech.edu, and
grind.isca.uiowa.edu. Grind did have this annoying 10-user limit, but
once you're on, you can hog it for as long as you want. Depending on
where you're connecting from, cco may be slower, but usually doesn't
have user limits.

   Ftp in general usually has an idle time kickoff 'feature': if you
don't type anything for say 5 minutes, it disconnects you. Whether the
ftp daemon at a site is smart enough to see that you can't hit
anything when downloading everything in a directory is a different
story.
