Bringing AppleWorks WP files to PC clone

An author friend has supplemented her IIc, which runs AppleWorks, with
a new PC clone. What is the best way to get the files across with basic
character attributes (italic, bold, underline) intact? If the answer is
to use a file transfer protocol and a serial cable, how can I obtain
Kermit for the IIc running AppleWorks? (I have Kermit for the PC, but
have no way to create a IIc disk on my IBM even if I can download
the executable.) I have a Copy II PC Option Board that can supposedly
read Mac disks; does AppleWorks use HFS or MFS?

Finally, if I *do* manage to bring AppleWorks WP files across to a PC,
will they be readable immediately? If not, how can they be translated
to a format that a PC wordprocessor can read?
