AAAAAUGH! ][e went nuts! Help!
Tonight I was working on a big Applesoft program under DOS 3.3...a big
nine-file custom relational database. I had GPLE.LC running at the time.
My program stopped unexpectedly (no beep, no message, no nothing). And
the machine began to behave in an unusual fashion. Any DOS or Applesoft
command would dump me into the Monitor. Figuring I had trounced some
important memory locations, I did a three-finger-salute (OA-RESET), and
the system promptly failed to re-boot. I killed power, waited a bit, and
powered up...got a screenfull of garbage as the drive spun up and
recalibrated, then continued to spin as the system crashed into the monitor.
Having seen that symptom before (the DOS crash, not the screen garbage), I
shut down, opened the drive door, and powered up again. Same thing. I
tried the 3-finger salute again, this time I got the "Apple ][" message
along with some other garbage, and *no* reaction from the disk drive.
My next step was to be to bump all the boards (MPC parallel card, Apple
extended 80-column card, Apple SSC, and Disk ][ controller), but before I
did that, I suddenly remembered (and tried) the SA-RESET self-test.
Instead of the white screen (this is an unenhanced ][e), I immediately got:
ROM:E10
I repeated the self-test a couple of times with the same result, then
finally got "KERNEL OK". So I tried booting up. Worked fine. Now, I
don't seem to be having any problems. But something tells me this may
happen again. Does anyone have any ideas?
I did pop the lid, and noticed that board location E-10 happens to be the
EF-ROM chip. Am I losing that chip now? (If so, I have a reason to get
the enhancement chipset, I guess...but I'm keeping the old Video ROM since
the improved 80-column firmware is in the CD and EF roms...)
Thanks for any advice...
