How many...models/types: APPLE ][ computers?

Hello all,

I've seen a lot of Apple ][ systems for sale on the net and am interested in
buying one.  But I need to know the difference between say an Apple IIe, an 
Apple IIc, and an Apple IIgs system?  Are they all compatible?  From what I
can remember in the early 80's some of them had green monochrome displays,
some had color on AMDEK monitors, and the GS systems had better graphics than
all the others.  I need more info...is there an APPLE ][ FAQ?
