Apple II Info Needed

Hi.  My parents own an old Apple II+.  Their files are in Dos format. 
They need to convert the files to Pro-Dos, but I know Pro-Dos file names
can only be of a limited length.  Can someone tell me how limited?  8
chars?  12 chars?  My parents need to rename a bunch of their files before
trying to convert them.

Regarding converting the files:  Is it simple?  I tried using some file
utilities on a IIgs but I don't think I successfully converted the files
to Pro-Dos.
