If I didn't know better, I'd say it was the cable - I've seen things
quit right at the file-query stage when there was a problem with
handshaking lines.  But you said you had success initially.  What's
your cable's pinout?  How are you connected to the G3?  I assume it's
a USB adapter - which one/chipset is it?
