If it is the same as UM with AW 4.0 then you do the following:

1. oa-X and get prompt to hit a macro key to record

2. Hit a key, say A. If it says recording in the lower right corner of
   your screen, you are off and running. If it does not say recording then
   you have selected a key associated with your default macros and it will
   not record over those. Repeat steps 1 & 2 with different keys.

3. Once you have the Recording prompt you simply hit key strokes,
   normal keys, oa-somekeys, sa-somekeys, etc., until you have the
   function recorded. Then hit oa-X to stop recording.

4. Hit sa-Key, where key is the key from step 2, to play your macro.

Recording another macro erases the previous recorded macro as does
exiting AppleWorks.

I would bet a cookie that there is a file on your 5.0 disk that does a
pretty good (better) job of describing what I just attempted.
