Font question

Recently my university began receiving the relcom.* newsgroups, the articles
of which are written in Russian using a system of transliteration from the
Cyrillic alphabet to the Roman. I thought it would be pretty nifty to
download the articles to my GS, and view the articles using a Cyrillic font.
So, I tinkered around with one of the existing system fonts, changed a few
of the letters, and saved it in the System/Fonts directory as "Cyrillic.10".
However, when I rebooted the computer and used Teach to view some of the
relcom.* articles, the new Cyrillic font did not appear in the Font menu. I
rechecked the Fonts directory, and it was definitely there.

Can anyone explain why the new font isn't showing up? I checked some of my
GS reference books, and the only thing any of them say is that any fonts that
will be used by applications must be in the System/Fonts directory. The only
thing I can think of is that I may have too many fonts in that directory; I
recently used the System 6.0.1 Install disk to install all available fonts.
However, this doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me, and besides, I never
saw any warnings about a maximum number of fonts during installation or in
any of my references.
