Are you certain the //c motherboard won't fit inside the Mac case, if
installed vertically?  You might have to give up the internal disk drive
to make room, and you would have to replace the ports with cabled
connections...but then, that would give you the opportunity to abandon
those @#$! DIN connections in favor of the DB-9 or mini-DIN connections
used elsewhere in the Apple world.

The only problem with this is that I think the existing video display card
is vertical, and the //c motherboard would probably displace it.  But
driving a video display might use a smaller card, which you could
relocate to the bottom of the case.  In any case, I think the other folks
here are right...cutting the board might be more trouble than you
bargained for.

If you MUST cut the board, spend the money and invest in connectors to
attach to the traces.  Also, realize that it is very difficult to solder
directly to a trace, even once you've scraped off all the green stuff. 
The best way I have found for wired repair of traces is to find a
component solder point along the trace and run a wire from there.  I had
to repair a TV set with a broken board, likewise an answering machine, and
several pieces of broadcast gear with delaminated or broken traces...

Incidentally...are you also going to put the power supply inside the case?
 There's plenty of room in there, it's just not laid out well for big
motherboards.

Oh, and it just occured to me...I'll bet the Mac monitor doesn't meet the
(non-existent) RS-170A standard (NTSC) required by the //c...you might be
ahead of the game to get a 9" monitor and install that, using its
electronics.  Heck, then you could have color!  And, you could put the Mac
monitor into the monitor's old case, and stick a Mac into your //c case. 
So you've got a ][ in a Mac (literally), a Mac in a ][, and a Hard Disk
][.  Someone walking into your computer lab won't know WHAT to expect! 
What next?  A GS in a tower?  Yikes!
