Apple III questions

Well, this might be off subject, but I don't know where else to ask...
I have this old Apple III that has been sitting on my shelf for almost
two years, and not once has it been used. By counting the DRAM chips on
it, it appears to have only 128k. I have heard they can be expanded to
256k. How? With what type DRAM? I have plenty of 64x1 DRAMs that I
could pop in there if they'd work. Also, I'm not sure if it works like
it should. When I turn it on, nothing happens, no beep, no nothing.
Then if I press CTRL-RESET and then let go, it puts 8 $ signs on the
screen, and starts to read the drive. It then puts RETRY on the screen,
and whenever I hit another key it will try to read the drive again. It
then keeps putting retry on the screen. Is it working right? I don't
have any software with which to test it... which brings me to my next
question. Are there any ftp sites around that have Apple III programs
online? Thanks for any info you can give... I'd like to get some use out
of the old Apple III.
