modem woes

I recently acquired a Quantum Data Systems Ltd. "ACTIVE 144UF" 14400 
fax/modem 
hooked on my ROM1 GS with almost all cables described in ANSITerm manual.
 
I have tried a lot of "at" commands, "init" strings and reduced/increased 
the 
software speeds. I have also used "ProTerm" (demo), but to no end.
 
The helpful guys on #AppleIIGS, as well as Jawaid Bazyar from Sequential 
Systems, have suggested various commands but all resulted in this:
 
The modem connects to at least four BBSes and functions flawlessly at 
14400. 
After, though, a 8 to 10 minutes of function, the line is cut off and the 
NO CARRIER message pops up.
 
This same modem works on a friebd's PeeCee with no problem.
 
Any suggestions/help?
